ABCD Black Desert, LLC runs small group expeditions from our base in Santa Clara, Utah, at the edge of the red rock country. Our certified desert guides lead hikers, photographers, and night campers along permitted routes through Snow Canyon, Zion Rim, Coral Dunes, and Grand Wash. Every journey follows a practiced rhythm of briefing, crossing, camp, and star descent, so you can give yourself fully to the land and to the long quiet of the night. Groups are capped at twelve travelers so that every person has room to learn the country, and each trip runs under current public land permits with a licensed guide at the front of the line.
Five Movements of a Night Expedition
Every BlackDesert expedition follows the same practiced arc, refined across more than one hundred twenty night crossings of the Utah backcountry. From the first gear check at the trailhead to the final walk home beneath the stars, each movement has a purpose, each pause a lesson. The route is never rushed and never improvised. It is a ceremony we repeat with care because the desert rewards those who take their time, and it punishes those who arrive unprepared. Groups move at the pace of the slowest boot, and every decision on the trail is explained as it is made, so the experience teaches as much as it shows.
Trailhead Briefing
We gather at the trailhead as the light turns amber and the wind settles into silence. Your guide checks your pack, fits your boots, and explains the route, the weather, and the signals we use in the dark. You sign the route plan, fill your water, and confirm the group pace with your fellow travelers. When the gate swings shut behind us, the ordinary world closes with it, and the expedition truly begins.
Dune Crossing
The first dunes rise like frozen waves and swallow the last of the daylight. We walk the ridges, not the troughs, learning to read the slope and place each foot on the firm side of the sand. Your guide teaches the short step, the rolling ankle, and the quiet heel that keeps the surface from giving way. A short crossing on soft ground trains your legs for the longer miles ahead, and by the top of the tallest ridge the city lights have gone entirely.
Canyon Narrows
By mid evening the route folds into slot canyons where sandstone walls rise high and the air turns cool against the skin. We move single file through the narrows, placing hands and feet with care, and pause in the deepest chambers to hear the desert hold its breath. In these passages the walls narrow to arm span width, and the sky becomes a ribbon of deep blue above us. These sections reward patience over speed, and they are where most groups learn to trust their guide completely.
Sunset Ridge Camp
We climb to a broad ridge just before the sky catches fire, then make camp as the last color drains out of the horizon. Your guide sets the tent, the sleeping pads, and the cooking circle while the moon lifts off the eastern edge of the world. A warm meal, a low fire, and the first full hour of true darkness close the day. This is the hour when travelers stop talking about their schedules and start talking about the sky instead.
Star Descent
After midnight we pack by headlamp and walk the descent with the light hooded low, letting the Milky Way light the path ahead. The return is the quietest hour of the expedition, a slow fall from the ridge back to the trailhead where cold water and your own bed wait. Your eyes adapt to the dark, your step settles, and the route you climbed by dusk reveals itself all over again. You arrive changed, carrying the dark with you like a gift.
The Waypoint Ribbon
Nine permitted routes thread through the red rock country around Santa Clara, Utah. These five waypoints anchor our most traveled ribbon, each one chosen for its light, its silence, and the quality of its night sky. Every campsite on the ribbon is scouted weeks in advance and left exactly as we find it. Each waypoint carries its own wind and its own lesson, and we rotate the ribbon with the season so no single stretch of sand bears the weight of every visitor.
